WHAT IS CASED CRYSTAL - Cased crystal is made out of two layers of crystal melted together - a colored layer of crystal on the outside and a clear layer on the inside. The outer colored layer is then hand-cut away to reveal the clear layer underneath.

Note that the color is added to molten crystal and is then worked. This is the traditional and highest quality way of making two-tone colorful crystal. Due to this technique, each piece is blown twice making it inherently more valuable than similar clear crystal. When looking for quality colored crystal, ask the dealer for true cased crystal and avoid painted crystal. Cased crystal always appreciates in value and is becoming more rare as companies turn to surface painting.
