These are a unique pair of decanters, both in thier physical characteristics and in how I acquired them. I won't bore you with my acquisition narrative, suffice yo day it was most certainly not the way I come upon most fine crystal I offer for sale here. Physically, these two are monsters! Each decanter weighs in at 3 pound 6.6 iunces (1.5 kg)and stands 13 3/16 (32.5 cm) inches tall. So the obscure heights and weights when measured in American inches versus the much more typical metric measurements tell me that these decanters were made in either Europe or South America. The style of the pieces, particularily the grand, flowing lines, heavy lead-dense crystal, unique base and overall appearance tells me these are most definitely French.

Lets just say that they were made in a small town of Nancy , and come from a company who has heen making world - c l a s s crystal with unusually high lead content f o r v ery (VERY) long time. That (not) being said these are quite amazing decanters, marked Baccarat , Severs , St Louis , or the like! Starting at the top with the atoppers, each heavy crystal stopper has eight (8) rounded waterfall-lines that extend off the stopper a good 1/8 and run to the top of the stopper and all the way to its base before being cut to fit the decanter itself. There are actually two (2) seperate riseand fall points in each "cut" between each of the waterfall lines.

This is classic French design , and just another circumstantial piece of evidence leading to my conclusion regarding thier country and region o f manufactures. The decanters themselves are identical. Both appear rather plain for high-end French crystal makers ulfrom a distance. However, once you are up close the details and subtle elegance that is decidedly French crystal beome apparent. From the rim down the neck in keeping with symmetry that is a hallmark of the two biggest fine crystal manufactures of the refion are eight (8) cutsbwrappong around the neck of each piece before the first of two elevation changes before you get ro rhe barrel of the decanter itself.

Once you reach the barrel proper eight (8) quite large rises protruded drastically increasing the overall diameter of the piece and run the full length of the decanter' s barrel to the base. Here is where the artists talent and the manufacture's commitment to design becomes clear. Instead of terminating at the base , all eight (8) of the waterfall protrusions continue and wrap under the barrel to the base AND ACTUALLY FORM THE BASE UPON WHICH THE DECANTER RESTS.

THE BASE " PROPER" NEVER COMES IN CONTACT WITH THE SERVICE SURFACE. SIMPLY , THE WATERFALL PROTRUSIONS BECOME THE FUNCTIONAL RESTING BASE OF THE PIECE. Taken in total I have no doubt that these decanters were manufactured in Nancy , France somewhere from the 1980's through likely 2 0 0 0. While there is no way to tell wxactely when they were manufactured, the heavy nature indicating a high (and therefore EXPENSIVE) LEAD PERCENTAGE coupled with the elegant flowing style and design is indicative of the French resurgance of nationalism that was occuring in the mid-1990's.
